The Billing Project is an initiative funded by the Legal Education Foundation (LEF) and the London Legal Support Trust (LLST), to aid and support the free legal advice sector with their billing needs. Improved billing helps enable the advice agencies to secure cashflow and increase income.
The first pilot involved funding the position of one Billing Coordinator in an advice centre. Within a year, the role had become self-sustaining.
The second project was expanded to include three London advice agencies, with shared Billing Coordinators working to implement improved billing procedures. A report of learning from this project, and some Billing Guidelines for the sector will be available soon.
From January 2022, the third Billing Project is running with six advice agencies involved across London, and one in Brighton. The advice agencies are in the process of recruiting and appointing Billing Coordinators to help them increase their legal aid income.
