The cost of living crisis is widening the poverty and justice gap further, at a time when legal advice charities are “fighting to keep the doors open every day”. Inflation and the spiralling cost of living has come hard on the heels of the pandemic; those who are suffering the most are the least well off in society. Their income is insufficient to keep up with day to day living.

The choice to heat the home or feed themselves and their family is stark for some people.

LLST is increasing our support to free legal advice agencies, ensuring they can cope with the tsunami of people coming to them every day for help. We are providing extra grants and more advisers to advice agencies to help our communities’ poorest people through a long hard winter and beyond. 

Legal advice charities are anchors in the community; they provide support, advice and referrals to give people the help they need during the cost of living crisis.

Case Study
South West London Law Centre

Jasmine was unable to work due to ill health. As a result, she built up rent arrears and a number of other debts, including on her credit card.

“I was working throughout the pandemic, but when the pandemic lifted, I went down in a spiral and got into deep depression. I got behind on my rent and was sent a letter about rent arrears. Then I received an eviction order. I think I was close to having a breakdown and I had suicidal thoughts.”

The crisis navigator at South West London Law Centre helped Jasmine successfully apply for personal independence payment (PIP), council tax support and the single person discount. The money adviser also worked with her to help her manage her debts and was able to negotiate with her credit card company so that they would not pursue the outstanding balance.

“I’m very, very pleased and so grateful for the help I received. If it was down to me alone, I never would have known about the grants and other help on offer. Without it I probably wouldn’t be here today.”

How donations make a difference

The money raised will go towards providing extra support to local community and grassroots organisations.  Your donations ensure agencies can deliver legal advice around debt, benefits and housing problems, as well as triage people in need of referrals to foodbanks and help with grant applications for fuel bills. 

This project will help provide thousands of people with life-saving free legal advice in the face of the cost of living crisis.
