Thanks for 2019

Thank You!

LLST really appreciates the support we receive from so many people during the year, and to work in such a committed profession and sector. We always worry about thanking people in case we forget anyone but we really are so grateful to each and every one who has taken part in our events, donated, supported, given advice to, worked pro bono for, volunteered for or otherwise helped LLST in our mission to support free legal advice for the most vulnerable in our communities.

We wanted to especially thank:

Support from the very top of the Profession

A rewarding achievement for LLST has been to harness support for free legal advice and pro bono agencies from the highest levels of the profession. Our President and patrons are active; they provide support and most have been out on events during the year. Lord Burnett, Lady Hale, Lord Dyson, Lord Judge, and Lord Neuberger all walked the 2019 London Legal Walk.

Many senior judges took part in the London Legal Walk, while in the areas outside London, most of our walks are now led by senior local judges. Mr Justice Haddon-Cave led our "Walk the Thames" runners this year, as well as running the London Marathon. Lord Justice Gross led our Walk the Thames walkers.

We are indebted to the presidents of the Law Society and CILEx and the Chair of the Bar Council as well as the many managing partners, heads of chambers and other leaders in the legal field who actively attend and support our events, and encourage everyone in their organisations to do so as well.

The senior supporters raise funds themselves and encourage others. That greatly enhances our ability to raise funds. We thank all of those supporters and their staff who organise them to attend and are themselves very supportive.

Donations and non-LLST event fundraising

As well as income from our events we receive very kind donations from Law firms such as Allen & Overy, Dechert, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Hogan Lovells. The City Bridge Trust support our "Centres of Excellence" programme. Those sponsors ensure that all funds from events go direct to free legal advice centres.

Charles Russell Speechly and Clyde & Co contributed to LLST's work to restore legal advice to Surrey by supporting the Kingston & Surrey Law Centre.

Other firms and individuals hold events or enter events for us throughout the year, going above and beyond to demonstrate their support.

The brilliant Stuart Wilks of Limeslade consulting organised another incredible fundraising evening at Expertise Rocks.

Marks and Spencers (High Holborn) kindly nominated LLST as their Charity of the Year and have been supporting us with instore till point collection tins.

In-Kind Support from Law Firms and Others

In addition to raising funds, firms help the Trust in many ways.

The support we have had from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer again this year has been incredible - they designed and produced most of the marketing materials for the London Legal Walk and for Walk the Thames. Special thanks needs to go to Sharon Metcalf and Claire Everest for their infinite patience and good humour in helping us. Their support in-kind has not only saved LLST a lot of money but also added great value to the process.

The support provided by Allen & Overy, which has been constant across the 16 years the Trust has existed, is crucial to the success of many events and we are very grateful for that help.

The Law Society & Law Society Gazette

As well as being main sponsors of the London Legal Walk, the Law Society allow us to use their premises free of charge at the end and provide water for the walkers while the Gazette put free adverts for our events in whenever possible.

Our Trustees
Our Trustees make the hard decisions about who gets grants. Applications always exceed the funds available and it is a very difficult process.

Our Volunteers
The Trust couldn't possibly achieve all that it does with only five staff members - as hard as we do try!

In addition to the fantastic support provided by law firms, particularly Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Allen & Overy, we rely on a lot of help from volunteers and interns.

Our wonderful interns (most volunteering one day a week) this year have been:

  • Elisabeth De Courson
  • Imogen Edge-Partington
  • Sarita Gautama
  • Mariana Plaza
  • Amirah Islam
  • Calum Proctor

Many others help out from time to time including many wonderful law students who act as stewards for the walks.

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped, supported, donated, walked, baked, shopped, painted, sculpted, ran, climbed, partied, bid, bought raffle tickets, campaigned and supported LLST and the free legal advice sector in 2019.

Please do check out our 2020 events here.

See you all in 2020!
