2006 London Legal Sponsored 10k Walk

A very big Thank You to all those who took part in the 2006 London Legal sponsored walk, to those who helped to stage the event and to those who sponsored walkers.

Over 800 lawyers took part in the walk raising over £90,000 for legal advice charities in London and the Home Counties.

The walk was led by the Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers: the Lord Chief Justice, Sir David Clarke: the Master of the Rolls, Kevin Martin: the President of the Law Society and Stephen Hockman Q.C., the Chair of the Bar.

Walkers included 31 senior judges walking for a judiciary and Civil Justice Council team as well as teams from all but one of the Magic and Silver Circle City law firms.

The walk was universally acclaimed as a success and as great fun as well.

In a short speech at the end of the walk, The Lord Chief Justice said:

“This, in only its second year, has now become the social and sporting event of the year. I was looking for the representative from Hello Magazine but I didn’t even see the Law Society Gazette! …. Congratulations to everybody…special thanks to those solicitors firms who have said that they will double the sponsorship of their representatives and to those who haven’t said it yet but are certainly going to say it when the pressure is put upon them to do so. ….You have all done enormously well for these very good causes. See you all here next year unless there are so many of you that we have to adjourn to the Royal Courts of Justice which I now promise will undoubtedly be available if needed”

Outstanding individual efforts included those from Lord Justice Lloyd whose sponsorship was over £4,500 and Lord Justice Rix who raised over £1,500 as did His Honour Judge Madge. Jeffrey Forrest from the Law Society Council team also raised well over £1,000.

Of the big City firms, Clifford Chance weighed in with a hefty team sponsorship of nearly £5,000 even before the firm made its own very generous donation. Several other firms raised well over £1,000 (before any firm’s funding was included) including Allen & Overy, Eversheds , Slaughter and May , CMS Cameron McKenna, DLA Piper, Holman Fenwick & Willan, Kendall Freeman and Lovells.

Among the Teams from Chambers, 39 Essex Street shone out with several leading counsel in the team and sponsorship of over £1,500.

The Law society team raised over £3,000 while BPP Law School’s £2,000 sponsorship was excellent for a team of mainly students.

The walk was sponsored by Hollman, Fenwick and Willan who paid for the entertainment and Weil, Gothsal and Manges who paid for everything else. Allen & Overy produced all the paperwork, signs etc while the Courts Service and the Law Society provided free venues. So the walk cost nothing to run and all funds raised will go to legal advice charities.
