5 Cities walks raise £50,000

On September 25th the Trust organised a sponsored walk in Brighton, led by Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, the Lord Chief Justice (our President). The walk raised £10,000 to support legal advice agencies in Sussex and is set to become an annual event.

Brighton Housing Trust Chief Executive Andy Winter with The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Justice Moses and District Judge Nightingale at the start of the walk.

Lord Phillips said that “Times are getting harder and the need for legal advice centres is increasing but extra Government funding is not forthcoming. So the work of agencies such as the Brighton Housing Trust needs our support. This walk was much nicer than the London one and the funds raised by the walk will grow each year”.

The Trust would like to thank 1 Crown Office Row’s Brighton chambers for hosting the post walk party (and raising £1,500 in sponsorship)

Brighton is in the LLST catchment area but we also used our walk organising experience to help organise simultaneous walks in Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

The walks collectively raised over £50,000 which is excellent for a first year. They are now set to be annual events which will grow year on year.

The Lord Chief Justice particularly praised the teams of Judges in all of the walks who collectively raised over £10,000 of the total.

The walks form part of an initiative to develop Trusts in each region of England and Wales, which, like LLST in London and the SE, will raise funds for legal advice centres. The Trusts, including LLST, will be enhanced by the national development of a new Access to Justice Foundation which will raise funds nationally and devolve a significant amount of those funds to the Trusts.
